The fight will take place on May 7, 2022. After Canelo lvarez unified all four major world titles to become the undisputed super middleweight champion with an eleventh-round technical knockout victory over Caleb Plante on 6 November 2021, it appeared likely that lvarez would advance to the world title in the fifth division. When his coach Eddie Reynoso successfully petitioned the WBC to allow Alvarez to challenge WBC Cruiserweight Champion Ilunga Makabu on November 15, 2021.[2] The fight ultimately did not take place, as Makabu was defeated on 29 November.
