During the time that Cameron has been on the road, Kelsey and the baby have been there with him, the American explained: “I’ve spent a lot of time with my family, my wife. We have a young child, so spent a lot of family time. Timing, which has been great. Honestly, they’ve been out with me for the past few weeks and being on the road with them is such a nice change. I think it keeps you fresh a little bit. You get off course and you Can forget about golf a little bit, which is really cool.”

Young Monday qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour’s Pinnacle Bank Championship at the end of July 2020 and finished 11th, making it to the next event; A string of four finishes of 16th or better, finishing with a tie for second in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, earned him enough points to become a Special Provisional member for the rest of the 2020–21 season.

Young won back-to-back Korn Ferry Tour events in May 2021 and finished 19th on the 2020–21 regular-season points list, earning a PGA Tour card for 2021–22.

In February 2022, Young finished second in the Genesis Invitational and reached the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking. In May 2022, Young finished third in the PGA Championship.

It seemed Cameron Young was missing the memo that, for most players, it takes a while to play well in major championships. The PGA Tour rookie finished third in the PGA Championship, and went out of the gates with a starting 64 during her first Open Championship on Thursday.

At the time of writing, Young was the bottom man of the morning wave with an eight-under 64, and was the tournament’s singles leader.

Young has come this season with a lot of compliments and for good reason. He is fourth on the Tour in both ball speed and club head speed, and second in Strokes Gend: Off the Tee. With five top three to go with it, and now with another fine start in a major, he is a rising star on the Tour.

How did he get there? It all started with his father and coach David Young, who was the leading professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club and a skilled player in the Met section PGA in his own right. It takes a lot to help a player like his son rise to the top, but he told us some tips that work for his son – and may work for you.

One of David Young’s best advice for juniors has nothing to do with golf. In fact, it has the opposite relationship with golf.

“We played a lot of other games,” he says. “Hockey and baseball were the main ones, we played them right until high school.”

David says when golf began to take over, but insists that Cam’s ability to excel in golf rests on a foundation built by other sports.
