Cam Newton is back in Charlotte.
The former superstar quarterback who once won the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player Award and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, is at Panthers Black and Blue again. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Newton signed a one-year deal with the team worth up to $10 million, including a full $4.5 million guarantee and a $1.5 million roster bonus.
The reunion was set in motion by Panthers coach Matt Roule, who reached out to Newton earlier in the week to assess his interest in returning to Carolina.
“He said yes out loud,” said Roulette.

Panthers General Scott Fitterer later confirmed that Newton had passed his physical and officially signed his contract.
“I always admired the competitive athlete,” Fitterer said, per the Charlotte Observer. “But really meeting him today, this guy is all about the team. He was a really impressive guy. He’s coming to help us. He thinks he can get us to the top.”
Newton met with team executives on Thursday morning to finalize his contract with the franchise, which had picked him for the first time overall over a decade ago. The veteran quarterback spent the preseason and all of the 2020 season with the New England Patriots after departing Carolina after the 2019 campaign.
Carolina needed the QB’s help after an injury to Sam Darnold, a torn scapula that landed a first-round pick on injured reserve. Darnold has had a poor game over the past five weeks, and injury hastened Carolina’s decision to shift center.
Roulette didn’t rule out Newton’s readiness to play in Week 10 against the Cardinals – PJ Walker is set to start with Matt Barkley – but he did admit the Panthers will probably knock him out sooner than later.

The Carolina Panthers have never been the same since Cam Newton left. I know at first glance this seems like the most obvious statement in the world. Obviously the teams are vastly different when a franchise goes quarterback, but it’s not about Newton’s game, not really. Despite the injuries, mismanagement and performance degradation that led to his exit, Newton was still respected, loved, in a way fans hadn’t realized for a long time.
Now, Newton is back. On Thursday, the Panthers announced that they had agreed terms on bringing back the No. 1, who will likely be their starting quarterback. It’s a reunion that feels right, even if these sides are torn apart. Newton’s early success in New England gave way to mediocrity, and the Panthers, as they tried to find a new passer-by, realized that the grass was not greener on the other side.
The football merits of bringing back Newton are up for debate. The move doesn’t make sense: Carolina has a soul again.
In the 18 months after Newton left, the Panthers had become one of the most boring, milky teams in the NFL, motivating nostalgia rather than emotion. The desire to establish an analytical, data-based approach to football inside the organization with Matt Roulette made Carolina feel like a terrifying math class that required you to sit for three hours each week. Whether the new approach will work for the Panthers, only time will tell, but the early returns are not good. Newton never represented hard numbers. He was not the perfect scientific quarterback. Watching him play was like listening to jazz fusion, sometimes confusing, often challenging, with enough moments that blew you away that it made you feel something. Now he’s back.
