Newton made an impact in his first season, where he set rookie records for passing (4,051) and rushing yards (706) by quarterback, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in the process. The league’s first rookie quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season [4] and the first to throw for 400 yards in his NFL debut, [5] he also set the season record for quarterback rushing touchdowns at 14. [6] Between 2013 and 2017, Newton led the Panthers to three division titles and four playoff appearances. His most successful season came in 2015 when he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and helped Carolina achieve a franchise-best 15-1 record for Super Bowl appearances in Super Bowl 50. He is one of four African-American quarterbacks to win the NFL MVP and was the first to achieve it outright. [7]

After his MVP campaign, Newton struggled with injuries as the Panthers made the playoffs only once in their subsequent four seasons. After missing the majority of the 2019 season due to surgery, he was released by Carolina and played the 2020 season with the New England Patriots. He was released by the Patriots in 2021 and returned to the Panthers mid-season.

Earlier in the week, Panthers coach Matt Roulette said the team would “explicitly explore any and all options” in the quarterback position in the wake of Sam Darnold’s shoulder injury. At the time he was asked about signing Cam Newton, but he remained silent on the matter.

Roulette said, “I won’t get into any hypotheticals, I’ll probably just talk about people on the roster.” “But our job is to try to win, so we’re going to evaluate and talk whatever we think. But in terms of specific comments, I’ll just talk about my team.”

However, it appears that the team was considering a reunion with Newton. And now, it has become a reality.

Week 10 NFL Picks: Against the Spread | straight up

The Charlotte Observer reported that Newton was due to meet with roulette owner David Tepper and vice president of football operations Steve Drummond on Thursday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that there is a “genuine interest” in signing Newton with Darnold in 4-6 weeks. resulting from a shoulder injury.

And just after noon on the East Coast, the Panthers announced that Newton would return to the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2011.

The Panthers were carrying only two quarterbacks – Darnold and PJ Walker – before Darnold was injured. Carolina signed veteran Matt Barkley to add depth to the quarterback room, but there were still just two healthy quarterbacks before Newton was signed. And the Walker-Barkley combination has only combined to make eight career starts.

Newton has plenty of initial experience. He has appeared in 140 career games with 139 starts. This includes 124 during his 125 games played during his time with the Panthers.

While Newton has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, he ran for 592 yards and 12 TDs, starting 15 games for the Patriots last year. His passing numbers weren’t great, but he posted a respectable 7-8 record nonetheless.
