Earlier this week — he couldn’t remember exactly when — Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford learned he was without starting running back Cam Akers.
The Rams gave Akers a healthy shake and head coach Sean McVay explained why after Sunday’s 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
“Coach’s decision,” McVay said. “It felt like it was what was best for our football team. It felt like Kyren (Williams) gave us the best opportunity and what Ronny (Rivers) and Royce (Freeman) did, so I made that decision.
“I’m always going to make decisions that are in the best interest of our football team. I have a lot of respect for Cam Akers, but I felt like it was for our football team today and in this game and as we “Moving forward, this was going to be the best decision for us.”

Running back Cam Akers has finally found a new home. After starting in Week 1, sitting out Week 2 and experiencing a roller coaster of team- and trade-related drama last fall, Akers has been traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Minnesota Vikings.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings will receive Akers and a conditional 2026 seventh-round draft pick for a conditional 2026 sixth-round selection.
In the real world, this deal should immediately help the Vikings, who have struggled mightily on the ground this season and rank 30th in yards per carry and 32nd in rushing yards heading into Week 3.
In the fantasy world, there are many winners and losers standing after Wednesday’s trading.
Akers will be a winner on the fantasy front, and his progression could happen quickly. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was the Rams’ offensive coordinator during Akers’ first two seasons, and the 24-year-old should already be familiar with many of the Minnesota concepts and terminology.
The Vikings, presumably, would also be willing to give Akers the kind of opportunities that Sean McVay didn’t get. Akers spent part of last season away from L.A. amid trade talks and was a healthy scratch last Sunday.
