How did get caught
Calvin Ridley placed his bet using a legal sports gambling app, and thus the Atlanta Falcons receiver was caught for violating a serious NFL rule.
The NFL announced Monday that Ridley has been suspended for at least the entire 2022 season after gambling in NFL games. Many wondered how the league found out about Ridley’s bet, and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network shared the answer.
Ridley placed several Parley bets between November 23 and November 28 using the Hard Rock Sportsbook app. He was then in Florida, where sports betting is legal. The bet was flagged off.
College
Ridley attended and played college football at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban. Ridley earned instant playing time in 2015 as a true freshman. [7] In his first career game on September 5, 2015, he made three receptions for 22 yards against the University of Wisconsin. [8] He scored his first collegiate touchdown on September 26 in a victory over Louisiana-Monroe. [9] In the next game, against Georgia, he had five receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown in the win. [10] He then scored 140 receiving yards and a touchdown in a win over Arkansas. [11] In the SEC Championship against Florida, he had eight receptions for 102 yards in victory. [12] The Alabama Crimson Tide made the college football playoffs. In a 38–0 win over Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl, he had 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns. In the national championship against Clemson, he was held for six receptions for 14 yards but the Crimson Tide won the national championship by a score of 45–40. The Atlanta Falcons received their first major surprise of the off-season with the NFL announcing the year-long suspension of WR Calvin Ridley on Monday afternoon. Obviously, the move has big implications for Atlanta, but also for the rest of the league. Ridley was expected to be one of the top receivers available, and his absence would shake things up for the rest of the free agent class.
In terms of the future, what we do know is that Ridley will not play in the NFL in 2022 – assuming any appeals are denied. But what about the impact on the Falcons salary cap for the 2022 season and beyond?
Based on the reports we have, it seems pretty clear what the salary cap implications of Ridley’s suspension will be. I will summarize below.
A source told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breyer that Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley made several multi-leg parlay bets, including three-, five- and eight-game parlays, and that he bet on the Falcons.
All bets were placed through a mobile app in Florida between November 23-28. Ridley was using the only legal gambling app in Florida and was caught when the NFL was notified by a compliance company that the league uses for such an opportunity.
The Falcons defeated the Jaguars 21–14 on November 28.
