Caleb Sequan Williams (born November 18, 2001) is an American professional football quarterback for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). After one season of college football with the Oklahoma Sooners, he played for the USC Trojans and won the 2022 Heisman Trophy after setting single-season school records in passing yards and touchdowns. Williams was selected first overall by the Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft.

David Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in 2002, got his first start as a rookie quarterback until the Chicago Bears beat the Tennessee Titans 24-17 on Sunday. Admittedly, Williams did not contribute much to the victory. They threw for less than 100 yards and were extremely poor on third down, and every one of Chicago’s scores came from either defense or special teams.
But teams with the No. 1 pick usually have it for a reason, and the Bears were no exception (though they did have the specific pick in last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers). They had losing records in each of the last three seasons, with an offense that repeatedly ranked in the bottom half of the NFL and in the hearts of their fans.
It’s no bad thing to start the season with a win and keep this long-suffering city’s optimism in Williams alive. As long as it doesn’t instill a false sense of confidence, and Williams looked after the game like someone who knows exactly where he stands one game into his NFL career.
