The sports world can’t wait for the much-anticipated Final Four matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils. There will be a lot of talent on the floor in New Orleans, but UNC’s Caleb Love will be one of the biggest stars. Only the Tar Heels faithful to love will not root for him. Jason Tatum’s father Justin Tatum will be there too.

As for the elder Tatum, his original interest is a bit hazy, as his son played for Mike Krzyzewski in Duke. Nevertheless, he has been instrumental in Love’s development as a basketball player. With ties on both sides, Tatum is up for an emotional roller coaster during the epic NCAA Tournament semifinal matchup between heated ACC rivals.

Caleb Love is preparing to play on the biggest stage in college basketball. The stakes have never been that high, but it’s important to know how he got to this point.

Before arriving at Chapel Hill, Love attended Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Missouri. There, he had his high school basketball coach, Justin Tatum, father of a Boston Celtics All-Star, and former Duke Blue Devil Jason Tatum.

While Love’s talent is natural, Tatum helped turn the UNC star into one of the hottest hoops prospects in the country. 247 Sports rated the 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard a five-star prospect and seventh best player in the class of 2020. Love won the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year honor for the 2019 season.

Justin Tatum saw aspects of the Tar Heels guard playing in high school that he still sees in him today.

“They have an internal switch like no other,” Tatum said, according to Aaron Beard of the Associated Press. “And that’s it, just something vague.”
