Cael Norman Sanderson ( born June 20, 1979) is an American former folk style and freestyle wrestler, the current head coach of the Penn State University wrestling team. As a wrestler, he won an Olympic gold medal and went undefeated in four years of college wrestling at Iowa State University (ISU) (159–0), becoming a four-time NCAA Division I champion (1999–2002). He is the only wrestler in NCAA Division I history to remain undefeated with more than 100 wins in official matches. Sports Illustrated named his college career as the second most impressive college sports feat behind Jesse Owens setting four world records in one hour at the 1935 Big Ten Track and Field Conference Championship Meet.

Now they’re on another trip together to the NCAA Tournament, nearly a year after a whirlwind courtship lured Kyle Sanderson from his alma mater to coach the Nittany Lions.

Cody, the oldest of the Sanderson brothers, at 33, is Cael’s top assistant. The 23-year-old senior is one of the best wrestlers in the country at 157 pounds.

“It would have been much more difficult” without his brothers, Cael Sanderson said of making the leap to Happy Valley. “I’m really grateful that they both came with me, and it wasn’t easy for either of them.”

Sanderson began his coaching career in 2004 with a season ending as a special assistant for the wrestling team at ISU. After a short stint in associate head coaching positions, he became head coach for the season ending in 2007. In three seasons, Sanderson led ISU’s wrestling team to second, fifth, and third place national placements in NCAA Division I. [27] He coached his wrestlers to two separate NCAA Division I national titles.

Record Losses

Before the 2010 season ended, Sanderson became the head coach of Penn State’s wrestling team. As of 2019, Sanderson’s Penn State teams have won eight NCAA Division I team titles. [28] During that time, he coached his wrestlers to 23 individual Division I titles.

Sanderson all wrestled at Iowa State, and Cody and Cal later coached the Cyclones while Cyler was on the team. Two brothers coaching a younger brother in the same program is rare in big-time college athletics.

“This is a family committed to the sport,” said Mitch Hull, director of national teams for USA Wrestling. “There aren’t many families that have had that many (wrestlers) at that level.”

Soft-spoken Kael Sanderson, 30, is by far the biggest star in her family. His exploits in the game are respected the way NBA fans talk about Michael Jordan’s exploits on the basketball court.

Wrestling at Iowa State, he went 159–0 with four NCAA titles from 1999–2002. He is the only wrestler to win the four Most Outstanding Wrestler Awards in NCAA Championship history.
