As we head into the 2023 college football season, fans can’t wait to see what starting quarterback Cade Klubnick is capable of under center.
We have just a small sampling of what Klubnick can do by looking at the good and the bad. In the Tigers’ huge ACC Championship victory over UNC, Klubnick won MVP by completing 20 of 24 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown, rushing seven times for 30 yards with a score on the ground. While the Orange Bowl didn’t go that well for the young quarterback, several factors played a role in that performance.
Klubnick is set to exit in 2023, with the addition of 2022 Broyles Award winner Garrett Riley as offensive coordinator. Nevertheless, the 247Sports Power 5 QB rankings for 2023 ranked Klubnick as the No. 27 Power 5 QB heading into the season.
Klubnick was the fourth-highest ranked ACC QB behind Drake Mays (No. 1), Jordan Travis (No. 13) and Riley Leonard (No. 19).
Even with the small sample size, this ranking is low for Klubnick. He should exceed this ranking in 2023 as he leads the Clemson offense through the ACC.
Coach
It is impossible to pinpoint a single mistake that caused Clemson to lose the game in its 28β7 loss to Duke, but perhaps no play limited Clemson’s night more than a fourth down play in the final quarter.
Trailing 21β7 and facing a fourth and sixth down, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnick scrambled up the middle, making everyone look like he would easily win a first down. Instead, the second-year quarterback began scrambling almost a full yard short of first down. The rules state that the ball is dead where the quarterback begins his slide. Decline in business. Like many other drives for Clemson, the Tigers fell one yard short. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney commented on his young quarterback’s mistake.
“[The refs] made the right decision,” Swinney said “And yes, absolutely. I mean, absolutely. It’s a learning situation for Cade. He’s got to get a first down. And he could have easily gotten a first down.” But the rule is once you start your slide, you’re down. And so he started his slide a little late. So he’s down, and the penalty, it’s a dead-ball penalty of 15 yards, you know It’s their ball, but it’s a penalty after the game. So, you know, I mean, they made the right decision.”
Parents
Klubnick also excelled in track and was district champion in the 400, 4×400, triple jump and long jump. He also led his high school 7-on-7 team to the state championship. Klubnik’s parents are Todd and Kim Klubnik. His brother, Reed, plays football at Yale.
