Byron Kerrion Buxton (born December 18, 1993) is an American professional baseball center fielder for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was the second highest rated prospect in baseball according to MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus in 2015.

Injury update

Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton left Friday’s game versus the Boston Red Sox with an apparent injury in the first inning.
Buxton started the game by hitting a ball to short left field which fell to a somewhat confused Red Sox. Seeing his good fortune, Buxton hustle and slips first into second base for a double. However, when he reached the base before getting straight off the ground and walking, he slapped him on the ground in pain. Nick Gordon has replaced him.
Buxton had three home runs and a .976 ops entering Friday. The 28-year-old center fielder is one of the game’s most talented but also one of its most star-crossed. Buxton has played over 100 games only once in his last seven MLB seasons due to injuries.
Buxton started MVP-level in 2021 with nine homers and a .370 batting average, until a strained hip kept him on the shelf for more than a month. He broke his right arm after being hit by the pitch just three games after his return.
His 2020 season was cut short by concussion-like symptoms following a helmet injury from a pitch. He played just 87 games in ’19 before the season-ending shoulder surgery.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton abandoned Friday’s game after slipping to second base in the first innings. Buxton, who slapped the ground as he ended his slide, was able to walk off the ground under his own power, but was replaced by a pinch runner after hitting a leadoff double.
Buxton, who signed a stimulus-filled $100 million extension in November, has a long history of injury. In 2021 he missed more than two months with a hip strain, then after returning he was hit by a pitch that broke his finger, leaving him an additional two months out. Buxton has played more than 92 MLB games just once in a season, when he played 140 in 2017.
In 61 games last season, Buxton earned 4.5 WAR, the most produced by a player who has played less than 70 games since 1900. He dropped .306/.358/.647 and scored a career-high 19 home runs.
Including the first innings double, Buxton is 6 for 24 to start the season with three home runs and three doubles.

Twins center fielder Byron Buxton is one of the most dynamic and, frankly, one of the best players in baseball when he is able to stay on the field. Unfortunately, the latter warning comes up very often and it happened again.
Leading the game at Fenway Park against the Red Sox on Friday afternoon, Buxton doubled. He appeared to injure himself as he slid into second base. The sense of despair was virtually evident.
The Twins have since announced that it is pain in Buxton’s right knee and that he will be evaluated further. Jumping on both his feet as he came up and left on his own power, we’d hope it’s not serious. Expect more updates in the coming days.
In the meantime, well, there really isn’t much to be said other than this is a raw deal for the Buxtons, the Twins, and baseball.
Buxton has the potential to be a five-tool superstar competing for the MVP awards. He played 140 games in 2017, otherwise his career high is 92. Even in the 60-game season in 2020, he could only manage 39 runs. Last season, he was a superstar in every way his talent says he should be, but it was only for 61 games. He hit .306/.358/.647 (172 ops) with 23 doubles, 19 homers, 32 RBI, 50 runs, nine steals and 4.5 wars.
Even if you just doubled those numbers (meaning 122 game pace), you’d be looking at 46 doubles, 38 homers, 100 runs scored, 18 steals and 9.0 wars. It’s probably good enough to compete with Marcus Semien for third in the AL MVP voting. And, again, it will happen to him who is missing 40 games. How talented he is and what a strong punch he packs in the small samples when he plays.
So far this season, Buxton is hitting .250/.308/.750 with three doubles, three homers, four RBIs, five runs and a steal in seven games.
