Check swing

Bryce Harper: Check swing| Helmet| Umpire| Ejection

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Phillies clinched a wild-card spot, and because they are locked in as the No. 4 seed, their remaining regular season games are meaningless. They cannot further improve their position (or damage it) in the postseason.

However, that doesn’t mean his games will lack excitement. On Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates (GameTracker), Bryce Harper was ejected for arguing a serious check swing strike three call. He gave the nod to third base umpire Angel Hernandez and, as he walked back to the dugout, Harper threw his helmet into the crowd.

Mr. Harper can expect a fine, possibly even a suspension. It should be noted that the suspension will only cover regular season games. He won’t have to miss games in the postseason, not that a long ban should be expected. One game, maybe two.

Helmet

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the helmet ended up in the hands of 10-year-old Hayden Dorfman.

“Some security guard came up to him and told him Harper wanted to sign it,” Inquirer Phillies writer Alex Coffey wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Later, Dorfman recalled to the news outlet how “they were about to go to Shake Shack after I went to the bathroom [when] the security guards started calling us. They said, ‘Harper wants to sign this!’ “

“They took it and said they would be back in about 20 minutes,” the young fan said.

After receiving a signed helmet from the Phillies star, the young fan told the Enquirer Harper was his favorite player and that Thursday night’s game was “his best baseball game ever.”

Umpire

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper was not impressed by a check swing strikeout call made by umpire Angel Hernandez, whose reaction got him ejected from Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“This Angel is in the middle of something again,” Harper told reporters after the game. “It’s just, every year, the same story. … It’s the same thing over and over again. It’s just not right.”

Hernandez called out Harper for a check swing on a 3-2 count. Harper argued the call, was ejected, and threw his helmet into the crowd while heading to the dugout.

Ejection

One lucky 10-year-old fan at Citizens Bank Park scored an incredible souvenir Thursday thanks to an irate Bryce Harper.

In the third inning of the Philadelphia Phillies’ 3–2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Harper was called out after swinging at a ball that was too low in the dirt. Harper checked his swing and tried to stop – on replay, it looked like he successfully did so – but third-base umpire Angel Hernandez said otherwise.

Hernandez called out Harper, frustrating the Phillies star. Harper attacked Hernandez and yelled at him all the way to the third-base line, and several Phillies coaches had to pull him back, even after he was ejected from the game.
