Why was in Russia

WNBA All-Star Brittany Griner was arrested last month at Moscow airport in Russia after a search of her luggage revealed a wipe cartridge.

The Russian Customs Service said on Saturday that the cartridges had been identified as oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The Customs Service identified the arrested man as a player for the US women’s team and did not specify the date of his arrest. Russian media reported that the player was Griner, and his agent did not dispute those reports. Griner, who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, has played in Russia for the last seven years in the winter, earning over $1 million per season — more than quadruple her WNBA salary.

Parents

Brittany Griner is the daughter of Raymond and Sandra Griner. According to her, she first told her mother Sandra Griner about her sexuality during her freshman year of high school, but kept it a secret from her father, Raymond Briner, until her senior year, and once she found out, she kicked him out of the house.

Recalling the hardship at that time, Daddy’s girl, who is now in a good relationship with her father, said that the experience made her a difficult person and prepared her for life.

Her story, which he co-wrote with Sue Howie in a memoir, is titled In My Skin: My Life on and Off the Basketball Court.
