Brittany Griner, a seven-time WNBA All-Star selection and Olympic gold medalist, has been detained in Russia for the past two months after Moscow officials accused her of having a wipe cartridge containing hashish oil with her at the airport.

Initial reports emerged of a standoff at the former Baylor University detained by Russian authorities after Moscow launched an unprovoked invasion of neighboring Ukraine on February 24.

Recently, a Russian court has extended Griner’s custody in the country until May 19.

Griner, 31, a member of the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, competes in Russia during the WNBA’s winter off-season, as most female basketball players play for foreign basketball teams to obtain more lucrative contracts.

Griner, who was recently named to the league’s 25th anniversary squad, is regarded as a genius of a generation in his position, known for his defensive tenacity and highlight-reel plays such as dunking.

US officials have cited securing his release as a “top priority”. Griner is perhaps the highest-profile US citizen detained by Russian authorities, though she is hardly the only one.

Paul Whelan, who was detained by authorities in 2018 on charges of espionage, which he denied, was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison. The US has also pressed for his release.

Griner, named ‘Best Female College Athlete’ for the 2012-13 season at Baylor at the ESPY Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, said she was still haunted by the memories of her teammates, who refused to believe that. She was a girl, questioning her sexual orientation and even physically groping her.

“I was always tall, my legs were always big and my voice was deep,” said Griner, who is 6ft 8 with a wingspan of 88 inches. Before the WNBA draft, she publicly came out as a lesbian in April.

In an honest interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Phoenix mercury powerhouse described a day in seventh grade when class had just left and the hallway was filled with students.

As Griner made his way through the crowd, a male student stopped him. ‘You are a friend,’ he said.

‘I just stood there and took it. I was humiliated. The whole school was laughing at me,’ Griner recalled to The Times.

‘When I was younger, it really bothered me to the point where I was like “I don’t even want to live; why am I being treated like that?” ‘ Griner said. ‘But as I got older, I started to care less.’

He said he told his mother that he liked girls after the first day of high school.

Griner said, ‘I felt a release, I felt better. ‘She was very good about it. She was like “I already know, and I love you.”

Her father, a former Marine, didn’t take it so well, and the tension between the two saw Griner drop out in her senior year.
