Brittany Yvette Griner (born October 18, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball for the Baylor Lady Bears in Waco, Texas. He is the only NCAA basketball player to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots. Why is being detained in russia
Griner, who played for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Premier League during the WNBA off-season, was detained after Customs Service officials said they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage at Sheremetyevo airport. Customs Service also released a video of a man at the airport who appears to be grinning passing through security.
Russian state TV showed a photo of Griner as part of a segment aired on March 5. This photo was reportedly taken at a Russian police station.
According to The New York Times, a criminal case has been opened in “mass transportation of drugs, which could lead to sentences of up to 10 years behind bars in Russia”.
Why was detained
The WNBA announced on May 3 that it would display Griner’s name letter and jersey number (No. 42) on the side of all WNBA courts this season. The league also provided Mercury roster and salary cap relief so that they could move on to a replacement player. The grinder will continue to get his full salary.
“As we begin the 2022 season, we are keeping Britney at the forefront of the game of basketball and the community,” WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement. “We continue to work to bring Brittany home and appreciate the support the community has extended to BG and his family during this exceptionally challenging time.”
The WNBA’s announcement on May 3 is the latest in a series of public statements issued since the original reporting of his detention this spring.
