Who does russia want to trade for
Washington has proposed Moscow a high-stakes prisoner trade – blaming Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for basketball star Brittany Griner and other Americans.
Griner, 31, a two-time U.S. Olympic champion and an eight-time All-Star with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, was convicted on Thursday of drug possession and smuggling into Russia and sentenced to nine years in prison.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in July that the United States had made a “substantial offer” to Russia, but declined to go into details.
Blinken said the matter is sensitive, adding that he expected a telephone call “in the coming days” with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over an offer to free Griner, along with former Marine Paul Whelan.
“The pair have been “wrongfully detained and should be allowed to come home,” Blinken told reporters.
“We put a big proposal on the table weeks ago to facilitate his release. Our governments have communicated that proposal repeatedly and directly and I would personally use the conversation,” Blinken said.
