Contrary to widely prevalent thought, WNBA professional Brittany Griner is not transgender. Griner, 6 feet 9 inches tall, is a cisgender woman and has never identified as transgender. However, the 32-year-old basketball player is actually part of the LGBTQ community because of his sexual orientation.

Brittany Griner is one of the first openly gay athletes in the league. He was previously married to WNBA professional Glory Johnson, though their marriage was short-lived and the couple separated in 2016. Griner is currently married to Cherrelle Watson, to whom she was engaged since 2018. Cherrelle Watson, however, is not a WNBA professional but a mathematics professor.

During her school days, Britney did not get much support from her friends who decided to choose her. Griner said, “I was already being picked on for being different, for looking like a boy, for having a low voice, so it was hard to imagine that I could do anything to announce that I’m even more different than what everyone else already thought.” However, due to bullying at school, Raymond does not support his daughter.

Despite being extremely tall and shocking many fans with her voice, she has worked her way to success in the WNBA. BG has never let discrimination and questions about her sexuality come in the way of her career. Even as a child, she was still finding her place in the world and never felt pressured to be where she belonged. He let it come naturally to him and eventually found who he is.

Griner grew up amidst a lot of struggle and hardship, being bullied at school and not being supported by her father. BG put in a strong performance and won the WNBA title with the Mercury. She is the youngest child in her family, with older siblings Shakera, Pier and DeCarlo. He spent his childhood in Houston and did his schooling there.

Griner made the serious decision to turn professional in his freshman year at Baylor University. Even when she was in Nimitz High School, she had not considered playing basketball at a professional level. However, she eventually made the best of her college years. She was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury.

Gender

Despite looking like a man, she is a woman but has a large presence in the LGBTQ community. However, Griner’s actual gender hasn’t stopped some fans from accusing him of being a man in disguise. The eight-time WNBA All-Star came out about her sexuality nearly a decade ago and is married to Cheryl Griner. The Mercury star was also previously married to another pro basketball player, Glory Johnson.
