Custody
WNBA star Brittany Griner will remain in Russian custody until at least July 2, Russian state-run news agency Tass reported Tuesday.
The 31-year-old American basketball player has been held in Russia since February after she was detained at a Moscow airport after authorities there claimed she was carrying a wipe cartridge containing cannabis oil. The US State Department last month reclassified him as wrongfully detained.
The Moscow region’s Khimki district court extended Griner’s detention for a third time, as Tass reported, citing a top Russian diplomat that said Moscow would not consider Griner’s involvement in a prisoner swap “unless That there is no court inquiry in his case. It is done.”
Deputy Secretary of State Sergei Ryabkov, according to Tass, was responding to US media reports that the Biden administration had offered convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout an exchange for Griner. Ryabkov did not give a timeline for proceedings in the player’s case.
Griner’s supporters continue to advocate for his release, with some worrying that Moscow could use him as a bargaining chip amid tensions over the war in Ukraine.
Court date in russia
A Russian court on Monday set Brittany Griner’s trial to begin Friday, according to her attorney, and ruled that the WNBA star’s detention has been extended by six months, pending its results.
According to an AFP photo, Griner – who has been held in Russia since his arrest at a Moscow airport on drug trafficking charges – attended a preliminary hearing in person on Monday, handcuffed in court and accompanied by guards. Came along. Photographer Kirill Kudryavstav.
Boykov previously told CNN that the trial would take place behind closed doors at Khimki Court outside Moscow.
