Brittany Griner knows the heightened emotions of being involved in a prisoner exchange all too well, and she said Thursday night that she’s overjoyed that fellow Americans are coming home from Russia.
“Gorgeous day. A great day. It’s a great day,” Griner said after the U.S. women beat Belgium 87-74 to make the quarterfinals of the Paris Games. “We’ll talk more about it later Will do. But any day the Americans come home, it will be a victory.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist is set to undergo her own high-profile prisoner exchange with Russia in 2022 after being sentenced to nine years in prison for drug possession and trafficking.
So Griner was thrilled to hear that Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gershkovich and Paul Whalen, a corporate security executive from Michigan, both convicted on espionage charges the U.S. government deemed baseless, were coming home.
Griner did not say how she learned of the prisoner exchange, but said she was “definitely emotional” upon hearing the news.
