One report said Robinson had received at least two bullet injuries in the lower part of the body.

The incident occurred in northeast Washington on the 1000 block of H Street, DC police told NBC 4. The suspects tried to take Robinson Jr.’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, which was scuffled and fired upon.

Robinson, 23, was Washington’s third-round draft pick last April and has been one of the stars of training camp, even propelling veteran Antonio Gibson to the starting running job. He didn’t play in Saturday night’s preseason final loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but wowed coaches, teammates, and fans with his physical running style in Washington’s first two games. He ran for 26 yards and touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago and added 31 last week against the Chiefs.

Was Shot

Spokesman Dustin Sternbeck confirmed Robinson was the victim and that the shooting took place shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of H Street NE. Robinson was shot twice and taken to hospital for treatment. The injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police are treating the incident as a possibility of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking. They said they recovered the firearm in the 700 block of 10th Street NE — a block south of the shooting scene — and were looking for two teenagers with shoulder-length dreadlocks. One was wearing a black or brown shirt with yellow smiley faces on it. No further details were immediately available.

“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, DC,” the commanders said in a statement Sunday night. “He was suffering non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where team officials are on site with him. We want you to respect Brian’s privacy at this time.”

Coach Ron Rivera was on the team of commanders with Robinson at the hospital. Team owners Danielle and Tanya Snyder, president Jason Wright, general manager Martin Mayhew, chief medical officer Tony Casolaro and mental health director Barbara Roberts were also with Robinson and his family.

“I just met Brian,” Rivera tweeted Sunday night. “He is in good spirits and would like me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers.

Condition after shooting

The NFL team said Sunday night that Washington Commanders rookie Brian Robinson Jr. was shot during an attempted robbery or carjacking.

The 23-year-old former Alabama player was taken to hospital with what the team called a non-life-threatening injury. The team said in a statement that staff members were with Robinson at the hospital.

DC police reported firing in the northeastern part of the city and said they were looking for two possible suspects.

Robinson, a third-round draft pick, was expected to start for the Commanders this season. He had been particularly influential during training camp and preseason games, potentially earning a job over the incumbent Antonio Gibson.
