Ranking Notre Dame’s best replacement substitute for Brian Kelly

Kelly, on the other hand, became Notre Dame’s most winning coach in the history of this season. Kelly has coached at Notre Dame since 2010, and has had two college football playoff appearances, and could add another this year (if he lasts through the rest of the season).

LSU’s previous three coaches, Orgeron, Les Miles and Nick Saban, all won national titles for the school. So, the stakes are high. Kelly has not won a national title at Notre Dame.

With that, here’s what you need to know about Kelly’s alleged jump from Notre Dame to LSU:

MORE: Is Notre Dame a viable route to the college football playoffs?

Why is Brian Kelly going to LSU?
Kelly’s move from Notre Dame to LSU has to do with one thing: Challenging for a national championship. More specifically, it has to do with better recruiting. It looks like Kelly has seven seasons with the Fighting Irish with 10 or more wins, including five straight. He has also made the college football playoffs twice, in 2018 and ’20 and, prior to that, was a participant in the 2013 BCS Championship Game.

But Fighting Irish were scrambled in all those appearances, losing to Alabama (2012 and 2020) and Clemson (2018) by combined scores of 103-31 – an average margin of 24 points lost per game. They haven’t won the equivalent of 6 bowl games on New Year’s Day since the Cotton Bowl’s 24-21 win over Texas A.

Salary

Brian Kelly’s move to LSU may have shocked the college football world, but the details of his contract are equally as attention-grabbing.

Between his annual salary and bonuses, Kelly will be the highest-paid coach at a public university, according to contract details obtained by Sports Illustrated’s Ross Delanger. His annual salary starts at $9 million in 2022, increases to $9.2 million the following year and then rises to $200,000 every two years (2025, 2027, 2029) before reaching $10M in 2031.

However, Kelly will also receive a $500,000 “longevity bonus” each July of the contract year, and a $500,000 bonus each season if LSU is eligible. For context, the program made it one bowl for 20 straight seasons prior to last year’s campaign.
