Hawthorne assistant coach Brett Raton’s son died in a car accident at Yarra Glen early today.

Cooper Ratton, 16, was on his way home from an event at the Yarra Glen Football Club on Saturday night when the car he was in overturned and rolled off Glenview Road.

Raton – who was sitting in the rear passenger seat – suffered life-threatening injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

Hawthorne Football Club issued a statement on the incident this morning on behalf of Brett Raton.

“Cooper, who was a rear passenger in the vehicle, suffered life-threatening injuries and died on the way to the hospital,” the statement said.

“The club asks that the media respect the privacy of Brett and the family at this sad time.”

Contract

Rattan signed a two-year extension in July, taking them to 2024, but failed to reach the final for a second year at a poor end to the season, which forced the club’s hand.

Brother

Brett Ratton has urged young drivers to take care of each other as the St Kilda coach opened up on the death of his 16-year-old son after a car accident.

Raton lost his 16-year-old son, Cooper, seven years ago, when he was sitting in the back seat of a car that rolled off the road. He died on the way to hospital.
