Belema served as head football coach at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 2006 to 2012, achieving a 68–24 record and leading them to three straight Rose Bowl games. He was the head football coach at the University of Arkansas from 2013 to 2017, with a 29–34 mark. Belema was an assistant coach in the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons with the New England Patriots in 2018 and 2019 and the New York Giants in 2020.

Not seeing his family since a short stay in New Jersey for Christmas, Brett hopes to board a plane by 7 a.m. and take a two-hour flight to his family’s rental home to return them champagne. Illinois on Saturday named former Big Ten coach and current NFL assistant Brett Belema as its new head coach, less than a week after moving on from Lavi Smith after a 2-5 start this season. Belema went 68–24 as Wisconsin’s head coach from 2006–12 and is 97–58 overall as a college head coach, including his time with Arkansas from 2013–17.

According to Jeremy Werner, publisher of the Illini Inquirer, Belema agreed to a four-year deal, worth $4.2 million a year. He is expected to attend today’s game at Penn State.

According to USA Today’s coaching salary database, Belema will be on the list of the top 25 highest-paid coaches based on annual salary.

Belema was fired after his fifth season with the Razorbacks. He served as a consultant for the NFL’s New England Patriots in 2018 and a defensive line coach in 2019 before taking a job as an outside linebackers coach for the New York Giants.

Belema went 29-34 in five years at Arkansas, taking the Razorbacks to a three-straight bowl from 2014 to 2016 after going 3-9 in his first year. But after a 4-8 record in five years, the Razorbacks wanted to move on.
