Brent Lakatos (born 1 June 1980) is a Canadian wheelchair racer in the T53 classification. Lakatos has represented Canada at three Summer Paralympics, and at the 2012 Games he won three silver medals in the sprint and middle distance events. Lakatos reached the pinnacle of his game in 2013 when he collected four gold medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships and became world champion in his classification in the 100m, 200m and 400m events.

In 2020, wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos reasserted his status as a gold medal contender at the Tokyo Paralympic Games with victory in the men’s wheelchair race at the London Marathon, which was held without spectators.

He described this win as one of the highlights of his career. The last Canadian to win the London Marathon men’s wheelchair race was Josh Cassidy of Guelph, Ont. in 2010. Lakatos has added the marathon to its strong repertoire of distances.

 

Parents

My parents were involved in sports – my mother played golf, badminton, swimming and my father played basketball and American football among other sports. My sister was a really good athlete and went to the University of Illinois on a full swimming scholarship, so the sport was all around me when I was growing up.

But one sport I loved the most when I was younger was wheelchair basketball.

I started playing basketball when I was about 12 years old and straightaway loved it. i feel like playing

Lakatos came from a sporting family and was swimming by the age of four. When he was six years old, a strange ice-skating accident resulted in a blood clot on his spine that left his legs paralyzed.[1]

Lakatos is married to Great Britain Paralympic sprinter and long jumper Stephanie Reid, and as of 2012 they live together in the UK.[2][3
