No beard
The no facial hair policy was used by legendary former Tar Heels coach Dean Smith. Smith relaxed the policy when people had health conditions.
After the CBS story on Maneck’s beard ended, former North Carolina point guard Kenny Smith said James Worth didn’t need to shave because his hair was ingrown.
“The only person who had hair on his face was James Worth because he had ingrown hairs,” Smith said. “And so he was allowed to wear one. But everything else? You gotta shave, bro.”
Smith was like former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who long had a strict facial hair policy that continues to this day.
Worth was also quite a player for the Tar Heels. He was an All-American and helped lead them to the 1982 NCAA Tournament Championship, where he was named the Most Outstanding Player. Worth became the No. 1 pick by the Lakers in 1982. He later became a 7-time All-Star and a 3-time NBA Champion.

Brady Manek of North Carolina was kicked out Saturday for elbowing Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan in the NCAA Tournament second-round game.
Manek had a season-high 26 points when he was knocked out in the second half.
Manek throws an elbow while stopping Sochan for a rebound. Moments earlier, Manek hit a 3-pointer that gave the eighth-seeded Tar Heels a 25-point lead against the defending champions.
