The NHL rulebook has its own characteristics, and one revealed itself during the Stars’ 3-1 loss to Boston on Saturday night.

When Brad Marchand was awarded a penalty shot after Ryan Sutter was called to keep the stick at the breakaway, it was questionable whether David Pasternak was on. But the Stars could not challenge whether Pasternak had touched the blue line before entering Marchand’s offensive zone as the play resulted in no goal.

Coaches may not challenge whether a play was offside prior to the penalty, even if the penalty (or penalty shot) resulted in a goal.

Marchand pressed a penalty shot and the Bruins took a 1-0 lead. If Marchand had scored in the opening play, the Stars could have challenged the play, although this was not readily apparent.

Video coach Kelly Forbes erred on the side of caution and did not challenge the play, as teams are given a two-minute delay of the game minor for incorrect challenges.

Contract

The Boston Bruins have the second best contract in the NHL with Brad Marchand’s current deal.
Back in September of 2016, Marchand signed an eight-year extension with Bee with an average annual value (AAV) of $6.125 million.

At the time, Marchand was entering his prime at the ripe age of 27 and had not had a season where he scored more than 61 points. However, since signing the deal, Marchand has scored four seasons with at least 80 points – one where he hit the 100-point milestone.

With Marchi’s aggressive production since signing the deal, there’s no doubt that the 32-year-old could have a lot to offer if the left-hander hits the free-agent market today.

Salary

The Boston Bruins have struck a few bargains for star players over the years. The fact that David Pasternak, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand don’t even have AAVs of at least $7 million is insane. These are the top players in the NHL, and yet the Bruins are able to place them on extremely team-friendly deals.

However, just because these guys are taking their hat a bit away with the hit doesn’t mean they aren’t still making good money. Let’s take a look at the top five highest paid brews of all time.

5. Brad Marchand
The pesky winger for the Boston Bruins has changed from a solid player who likes to get under the skin of his opponents, let’s call it unorthodox ways, to an elite player who still has that insect, but is much more toned Is.

Marchand has been one of the best right-wingers in the NHL for years, averaging more than one point per game every season since the 2016–17 campaign. He scored 100 points in 2019, helping the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup final. Marchand led all skaters in that postseason with 23 points.

Marchand is currently under contract on an eight-year, $49 million deal. His career earnings currently stand at $51,946,464. Not bad for the guy who also broke Bobby Orr’s franchise record for overtime goals.
