Bruins will have interesting goalkeeper position when Rask returns

When Tukka Rusk himself was seen practicing at the Warrior Ice Arena on Tuesday, the news spread quickly. This should come as no surprise as Rask is one of the best goalscorers in the history of the Boston Bruins and has not been the clear No. 1 starter for the team until this season.

Rask was unfortunately undergoing off-season hip surgery, however, the Bruins and Rask would turn down a new contract until the veteran netminder was healthy and ready to return to action. In his absence, the Bruins will be split between rookie goaltender Jeremy Swiemann and newly-signed Linus Ullmark until Rask can step up and contribute, should he choose to play again.
As it stands, however, Rusk is not under contract with the Bruins and a signing does not seem imminent as he returns to skating.
Depth chart
The Boston Bruins will have a different take on defense in 2021.
When the Boston Bruins were relegated from the Toronto playoff bubble, everyone knew there were going to be changes in their defense. Those changes became reality when Tory Krug left free agency on December 30 to join the St. Louis Blues and Zdeno Chara and announced that he was joining the Washington Capitals on a one-year free-agent contract.
With the Bruins young in the defence, they still have some veterans involved, but there’s no question that the pain is going to increase in the upcoming 56-game season. With that, let’s take a look at the Bruins’ depth chart on defense for this season.
Charlie McAvoy
As McAvoy begins his fourth season with the Bruins, he will be seen as the new leader on the Blue Line. In 67 games last season, the 14th pick in the first round of the 2016 Entry Draft set a career-high with 27 assists, as well as equaling his career-high score with 32. He averaged 23:10 a night and played a career-high 1,552 minutes. His average time-out this season should see him rise as one of Krug’s replacements on the top power play unit.

The Boston Bruins currently accept affiliations with several inductees to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Those associated with the Bruins include 52 former players and seven creators of the game. The six individuals identified as builders by the Hall of Fame include former Bruins executives, general managers, head coaches and owners. In addition to the players and builders, the Bruins’ two broadcasters were also awarded the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1984, play-by-play announcer Fred Cusick was honored with the Hall of Fame’s inaugural Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. In 1987, Bob Wilson became the second Bruins broadcaster to be awarded the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

The Boston Bruins fell short on Friday in a post-Thanksgiving fight with the New York Rangers at TD Garden, and head coach Bruce Cassidy addressed how the loss affected the team’s bottom six.
The Bruins have changed their lines several times this season, and Cassidy will continue to consider necessary changes as Boston looks to put its best foot forward.
“Well, we have to get their attention, of course,” Cassidy told reporters during his postgame news conference. “So yeah, I’ve done that in the past and it’s something we’ll definitely look at.
“You can’t be a role player and get the puck out of your net on a consistent basis. It won’t work. You need to do your part — whatever the team is for — and if you’re down the lineup, So it usually means some grunt work and some defensive responsibility where you’re trying really hard to keep it out of your trap.”
