Who is Dad
The tears rolling down the eyes of Bobby Witt Jr. and Sr. had been building up for years, and were not the result of pain or sadness.
Tears conjured up memories of hours spent at tea ball games and sweats in the backyard, mastering a swing or backhand scoop, as well as traveling from one ballpark to the next.
2 overall in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Royals was a wave of emotions as well as a huge step toward realizing a big league dream.
“I really don’t know what was happening to me,” Witt Jr. said Tuesday afternoon. “I felt like I was dreaming yesterday, then I woke up this morning and looked at my phone and it’s still true. I’m happy to be a Royal.”
Less than 24 hours after Witt Jr. received a life-changing call from the Royals’ scouting director Lonnie Goldberg, sitting on the couch and his name appearing on television, the nation’s top high school player and most recently Collieville Heritage High School Graduated sitting. At the same location for an interview with The Star.
His father, Bobby Witt Sr., who worked for 16 years at majors, supervised the second day of the draft from a room away. Witt Sr., the No. 3 overall selection in the 1985 draft, now works as an agent and senior customer manager for the Octagon.
Witt reigns as the most prosaic father-son duo in MLB history. He passed Tom Greave (sixth overall in 1968) and Ben Greave (second overall in 1994) for that distinction.
Call up
The Kansas City Royals didn’t waste a moment choosing Bobby Witt Jr when he was placed on the clock with the number 2 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Similarly, when it comes time to decide whether or not to make the opening day roster, there should be no hesitation.
No one is expecting the Royals to compete in 2022. Our MLB predictions project Kansas City to finish at the bottom of the AL Central standings. The organization has a bright future, but MLB has too many holes in the roster to compete with the best teams.
Typically, teams in a transition year will keep their top prospects low. In older CBAs, there would be something to take advantage of from this. Through service-time manipulation – rostering a player in the minor until they qualify for an accused season – clubs will gain additional contractual control and may limit future pay.
Things are different under the new collective bargaining agreement. Rookie of the Year finalist players receive a full year of service time, regardless of where they are promoted. It’s just one reason Witt Jr. should be on Kansas City’s roster when the 2022 season begins.
