For Seattle, this is the latest sign that the team is ready to go into full-scale rebuilding mode. It’s also a cost-cutting measure in the grand scheme of things. By releasing Wagner the Seahawks save a whopping $16 million against the 2022 NFL salary cap. Prior to the move, general manager John Schneider & Company was under cap of $34.77 million.

As for Bobby Wagner, he will certainly be joined by another team after a stellar 10-year run in the Pacific Northwest. However, this must be a bitter pill for the future Hall of Famer to swallow.

Star linebacker Bobby Wagner has one year left on his 3-year, $54 million contract, but faces an uncertain future with the Seattle Seahawks. Wagner’s $20.3 million cap hit and $16.3 million salary make him a potential cap casualty this off-season.

During the NFL Combine, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll expressed the team’s desire to retain Wagner. Still, Carroll also said that the team will have to “figure out where everyone fits together.”

“Well, we look forward to playing with Bobby,” Carroll said during a March 2 press conference. “We love playing with Bobby. He’s been a great player, he’s had another great season.

It’s the end of an era in Seattle. The same day the Seahawks pulled the trigger on a trade that sent quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team notified All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner that it was releasing him. The move saves Seattle $16.6 million against the salary cap, while allowing Wagner to sign with a new team immediately before free agency begins next week.

Wagner has spent his entire NFL career with the Seahawks to this point. The former Utah State product was drafted by the team in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft – the same draft in which the team drafted Wilson in the third round.

Out of the gate, Wagner proved to be an impressive player for the franchise, as he started as a rookie in 15 of his 16 matches and made a total of 140 tackles to go with two sacks. The following year, he helped lead a dominant Seattle defense—known as the Legion of Boom—to their first (and only) Super Bowl title with a 43–8 victory over the Denver Broncos. In that game, Wagner made a total of 10 tackles.

Donning a Seahawks helmet as well as hoisting a Lombardi Trophy, Wagner was named to the All-Pro first team six times and reached the Pro Bowl in eight of his 10 seasons with the team. He was also named to the NFL 2010 All-Decade Team and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise.

This past season, Wagner played 16 games and made a career total of 170 tackles to go with five pass breakups, a forceful fumble and a sack.

With this release and Wilson Trade, Seattle has moved past two of their longest-serving players in a single day.
