Robert “Bobby” Finke is an American swimmer. Finke is scheduled to represent his country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the men’s 800 meter freestyle event. He won a gold medal for the United States in the 2020 Summer Olympics Men’s 800 metre freestyle.

Bobby Finke took a look up, 760 meters into the race, and knew it was now or never. Whatever was left in the 21-year-old Floridian’s legs, he was going to have to wring out if he had a chance to get in the medal picture in the men’s 800 freestyle.

A rising senior at the University of Florida, Finke comes from a diehard swimming family. His mother, Jeanne, swam collegiately at Ball State. His dad, Joe, is a swim coach. And his two older sisters, Autumn and Ariel, both swam at Division I schools.

The 21-year-old Floridian, who spent most of the race in the middle of the pack, surged past the rest of the field to win a surprising gold in the event at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing with a personal-best time of 7:41.87. 

The gold medal came as a shock to casual onlookers – and to Finke, too.

High School:

Finke graduated from Countryside High School, where he was also a club swimmer for St. Petersburg Aquatics.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — After being delayed for one year, the Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo beginning this week.

Florida Gator swimmer Bobby Finke will be there becoming the first male swimmer from Pinellas County to be a U.S. Olympian.
