Sir Robert Charlton CBE (11 October 1937 – 21 October 2023) was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder or centre-forward. Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, in which year he also won the Ballon d’Or. He finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting in 1967 and 1968. He played almost all of his club football at Manchester United, where he became renowned for his attacking instincts, passing abilities from midfield, and long-range shooting from both left and left back. Funeral on tv
The funeral procession will travel to Old Trafford ahead of a private service to be held at Manchester Cathedral on Monday.
Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral will take place in Manchester on Monday afternoon.
The private service will take place at Manchester Cathedral from 2pm GMT, followed by a committal with the family.
The funeral procession will pass through Chester Road to Old Trafford – where thousands of fans are expected to line the streets – at around 1.30pm, before fans will get the chance to bid their farewells to the Manchester United and England icons.
The convoy will pass by members of the club’s under-18 and under-21 squads and a guard of honor to the statue before heading to the cathedral via the A56, Trinity Way, Chapel Street and Victoria Bridge.
Grandchildren
Charlton met his wife Norma Ball at an ice rink in Manchester in 1959, and they married in 1961. They had two daughters, Suzanne and Andrea. Susan was a weather forecaster for the BBC during the 1990s. They had grandchildren, including Susan’s son Robert, who is named in honor of his grandfather.
