Bobby Charlton: Cause of death| Obituary| How did die

Bobby Charlton, an English football icon who survived the plane crash that destroyed the Manchester United team that would go on to become great at the heart of his country’s 1966 World Cup victory, has died. He was 86 years old.

The death of Charlton, considered by many to be the greatest English player of all time, was announced in a statement from his family released by United, which said he died surrounded by his family on Saturday.

No cause of death was revealed. In November 2020, it was announced that Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia, the same disease that afflicted his brother Jack – who died in 2020 aged 85 – and another World Cup winner, Nobby Styles.

Obituary

Sir Bobby Charlton, who has died aged 86, was one of England’s greatest ever footballers. He was certainly the most successful, the only English player to win all of football’s major honors – the FA Cup, Football League and European Cups with Manchester United, and the World Cup with England, while accumulating a record number of international caps and goals.

As captain of United in 1968, when they were the first English team to win the European Cup, and a key player in the 1966 World Cup-winning team, he epitomized the Golden Age of English football. But he was also involved in one of the sport’s darkest moments, the 1958 Munich air disaster, which killed eight of his teammates, three United employees and 12 other passengers.
