Who is Billy Napier

Billy Napier (born July 21, 1979) is an American college-football coach. A former college quarterback at Furman Paladins, Napier transitioned into coaching soon after graduation and built a career as an assistant coach at several major programs including Clemson Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Arizona State Sun Devils.

His first major head-coaching role came at Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (2018–2021), where he revitalized the program. Under his leadership, the Ragin’ Cajuns achieved a 40–12 record across four seasons, recorded several 10+ win seasons, and captured two Sun Belt Conference championships — turning Louisiana into a consistent winner.

Tenure at Florida & Contract

In November 2021, Napier was hired as the 28th head coach of Florida Gators. His contract reportedly spanned seven years and carried a large financial guarantee, reflecting substantial faith in his ability to rebuild the program.

However, his time at Florida had mixed results. Across four seasons (2022–2025), Napier posted a 22–23 overall record, including a subpar 12–16 conference record in the SEC. While there were glimpses of success — like a bowl win and occasional flashes — overall the results failed to meet expectations.

Fired by Florida

The 2025 season began poorly for the Gators. After a 3–4 start, the program decided to move on. On October 19, 2025, Florida fired Napier — just seven games into his fourth season — officially ending his tenure.

Reports indicate the buyout for his dismissal was substantial. Estimates place the compensation at roughly US$ 19–21 million, with a significant portion required to be paid soon after his firing.

Despite one final win — over Mississippi State — the decision had already been made. Fans had chanted “Fire Billy!” during that game, underscoring the frustration with the program’s trajectory.

Turn to James Madison Dukes (James Madison University)

Napier’s coaching journey didn’t end with Florida. On December 4, 2025, it was reported that he was set to become the head coach of the Dukes, signing a five-year deal. This follows his successful prior record in the conference — making him an attractive candidate.

At James Madison, Napier succeeds Bob Chesney, who left to take the coaching vacancy at UCLA. The Dukes, currently one of the top “Group of Five” programs, finished the 2025 regular season with an 11–1 record and are competing in the Sun Belt Championship.

This new opportunity marks a return to a conference where Napier previously thrived (the Sun Belt) and offers a chance to rebuild credibility after a challenging stint at Florida.

Summary & What’s Next

Billy Napier’s coaching arc demonstrates both the highs and lows of college football coaching: from success at Louisiana, to a high-profile opportunity at Florida, to a falling out, and now a second chance at James Madison. His track record suggests he excels in conferences like the Sun Belt, though translating that success to a Power-Five environment proved difficult.

With the Dukes, Napier gets a program in good shape — and likely fewer unrealistic expectations than in the SEC. The next few seasons will tell whether he can recapture the form that made Louisiana a winner, or whether his struggles in Gainesville leave a lasting mark.
