Statue

On the most memorable days, as a sports writer, I feel like I don’t belong. I share a room with legends, some of the top athletes of all time, idols for generations of people. I look around and see fame. I see greatness. I see talent. And I question why someone let me walk through the door.

As Kenny Smith described the unveiling of the Bill Russell statue in Boston in 2013, it was like seeing all your business cards roaming the room. Julius Irving appeared. So did Charles Barkley. Bill Walton flew into the city. Jojo White, Tommy Heinsohn, Jim Brown, Alonzo Schock, Clyde Drexler and a long list of former NBA players did as well. Bill Withers and Johnny Mathis — both still cooler than a Gatorade bath — on a joint performance. President Barack Obama gave a glimpse of the statue before it was officially released to the public.

And the statue still stands as a testament to Russell, who died peacefully on July 31 at the age of 88.

Wiki

Russell was born on February 12, 1934, in West Monroe, Louisiana, to Charles Russell and Katie Russell. Like almost all Southern towns and cities of the time, Monroe was very isolated and Russell often struggled with racism in his daily life. Russell’s father was once refused service at a gas station unless the staff had previously taken care of all-white customers. When he tried to leave and find a different station, the attendant stuck a shotgun in his face and threatened to kill him if he didn’t stop and waited his turn. In another incident, Russell’s mother was walking outside in a fancy dress when she was assaulted by a white policeman. He asked her to go home and remove the dress, which he described as “white woman’s clothes”.

During World War II, the Second Great Migration began, as there were large numbers of blacks moving west in search of work. When Russell was eight years old, his father moved the family from Louisiana and settled in Oakland, California. While there, they fell into poverty and Russell spent his childhood in a series of public housing projects.
