Family
Finau had 3 1/2 feet for the bogie. As he waited for his playing partners to finish, the tournament organizers drove members of Finau’s family to the ramp behind the green. Finau dipped the putt, shook his hand toward the crowd and extended his fist toward his family. This was his first time celebrating such an end with him.
Thirty minutes later, in the media center near 18th Green, one of his sons lifted the 3M Open trophy from the table where Finau was about to hold his press conference. His father immediately stopped him. It needed to be the centerpiece a few minutes later. Soon it will belong to the Finau family.

Tony Finau earned his third top-10 in four Masters appearances, a stellar season for the 32-year-old with a tie for 10th place last year. They finished top-10 in the PGA Championship and qualified for the end-of-season playoffs. Then, five years since his last PGA Tour victory and nine runners-up, Finau won a playoff at Liberty National Golf Club. The Salt Lake City native helped the United States to victory over Europe at the Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits last year after being drafted into the team by captain Steve Stryker. Finau is the first player of Tongan and Samoan descent on the PGA Tour.

Like his idol Tiger Woods, Tony Finau prefers to wear the same shirt every time he goes to the final round of a PGA Tour event. Tiger has famously worn red on Sundays for decades as his mother told him to because she believes it is the color of her son’s power.
Tony Finau prefers to wear green every Sunday and his decision is also based on that of his mother, only for different reasons.
Death time
It was late Thursday when Gary Finau’s phone call came to his home in Salt Lake City. It was his 25-year-old son, Tony, who shot just 5-under 65 in The Barclays’ opening round at Plainfield Country Club.
“Man, I can’t believe it worked, Dad,” said the son.
Tony Finau, a heavy favorite to win Rookie of the Year on the PGA Tour, is living such an impossible game existence that filmmakers are trying to get each other down in the paint like an NBA power forward.
He enters Saturday’s third round at 6-under, one shot away from Bubba Watson’s lead, in the first of a four-tournament FedExCup playoff series that pays $10 million to the winner. Finau has already won nearly $2 million this year.
