Belichick’s grandparents, Ivan Bilicic and Marija Barkovic, immigrated to the United States from Croatia over 100 years ago.
“My grandfather emigrated and received his citizenship (US) in 1915. My grandfather came himself, married Mary (Marija) and came to work in the coal or steel mills in western Pennsylvania. Two years later, Mary came to visit.” And decided to look for him. She got on a boat and came to the United States and so they reunited and started a family,” Belichick had previously said.
“There was not much English spoken in my grandmother’s house. My dad understood Croatian and my mom learned it very quickly so she loved talking to my grandmother and her brother and other Croatian people who would be at home in Croatian. To be honest, I didn’t know what was going on until someone spoke to me in English.
