Thursday’s Big East tournament quarterfinal was an exciting one at the quadruple-header Madison Square Garden, and anticipation for Friday’s semifinals only grew even more.

Since the realignment, the quarterfinals were the stage of the tournament where there were a lot of blowouts and one-sided results. This year was different. It was the closest it got, further cementing the strength and competitiveness of this season’s Big East teams.

There were no gimmicks or easy games, two games of which were decided by single digits. The average margin of victory for the four quarterfinal games was 6.5 points. The biggest difference came from Creighton’s 11-point win over Marquette.

Only one Big East tournament quarterfinal comes to a close: 2014, the first year of realignment. The average margin of victory in the quarterfinals that year was 7.8 points, but it also included a blowout win over DePaul for Creighton 84–62.

The Xavier Musketeers may not improve much of their NCAA men’s basketball tournament stock at the Big East tournament on Wednesday, but they could damage it from damage.

Javier’s five-game losing streak led to the NCAA Tournament bubble, which saw it drop a few games below .500 in Big East play. Travis Steele’s side need to serve with a win over the Butler Bulldogs to set up a clash with top-seeded Providence Friars.

While Xavier is trying to win more games, the Georgetown Hoyas are hoping for just one win. The Hoys have not won the Big East competition as they had four victories in four days at the 2021 Big East tournament.

Georgetown will be happy with a win this time in New York, but the Seton Hall Pirates will make it harder to achieve.

Butler vs. Xavier (-5.5)

Javier enters the Big East tournament at the “Last Four In” line at the latest NCAA Tournament launch from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

The Musketeers fell into the bubble with a string of five defeats, including two against St. John’s Red Storm, which slightly devalued their resume.

Xavier has some decent non-conference victories over the Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Virginia Tech Hokies, which are backing its resume. So Travis Steele’s team has a clear way out of the bubble conversation in New York, and it begins with Butler beating the Bulldogs.

Butler enters Madison Square Garden on a five-game skid and loses to the Villanova Wildcats with just 59 points.

LaVall Jordan’s squad suffered injuries for most of the season and has recently been dropped, with three of its last five losses totaling eight points or more.
