Is still being paid

After he bore the brunt of the blame for the Philadelphia 76ers early playoff exit last season, Ben Simmons requested a trade. According to reports, Simmons felt he was hung out to dry by coach Doc Rivers and superstar Joel Embiid after the Atlanta Hawks stunned the Sixers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Simmons isn’t blameless in this affair. He’s made decisions easily perceived as passive-aggressive, such as refusing to communicate with 76ers officials for several weeks, putting Philadelphia-area real estate on the market, and getting kicked out of a practice by Rivers for refusing to participate.

But the Philadelphia organization owns some responsibility, as well. The team reportedly rejected trade offers for Simmons, demanding a superstar return in a situation where the player’s value continues to fall. Some of that devaluation stems directly from how the team is managing the situation.

While Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons has made it clear he would like to be traded to a team in California, Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey will no doubt explore every avenue for a deal, regardless of the location of a team. One squad that has shown interest in Simmons is the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Athletic’s Timberwolves beat reporter John Krawczynski, however, recently reported that the team is hesitant to give up any of their core pieces in order to acquire him.

The Philadelphia 76ers burst out of the gates to an 8-2 start to the season as the premier team in the Eastern Conference despite the absence of Aussie star Ben Simmons.

And while injuries and Covid-related absences have also played a role, the Sixers are now dwindling in the middle of the East standings at 15-15 and desperately miss Simmons’ play on both ends of the court.

Philadelphia’s been long searching for a suitable trade for the 25-year old, who remains away from the team citing mental health reasons, as it seeks a top 25 superstar in return.

Knicks

Roughly five months ago, Ben Simmons was fresh off a second-round exit with the Philadelphia 76ers at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks. Many NBA fans let their disapproval of Simmons’ performance be well known while the media speculated day and night what was next for the 6’11 point guard.

It was around this time that I had speculated if the New York Knicks would be a good fit as a potential landing spot for Simmons in a trade scenario. All these months later, Ben Simmons is still a member of the Sixers organization but is very much on his way out.
