Ben ‘Truck’ Rutten went on to have a successful 229-game career after coming off Adelaide’s rookie list after a challenging initiation to the AFL. After a knee reconstruction as a West Adelaide junior overlooked in two national drafts, Rutten was eventually selected in the 2002 Rookie Draft with pick number 40.
In 2021 he was selected among the best 22 of 30 years. When he made his debut in 2003 he scored three goals with his first three kicks, but over time Neil Craig opted to use his larger body on defense. After a rapid rise to one of the league’s best one-on-one stoppers, “Truck” was recognized at full-back with an All-Australian selection in 2005. He was known for his size, strength and ability to engage some of the best forwards in the game.
He rarely missed a game during his nine-season run from 2005–2013 and was arguably one of the club’s most trusted players. During his final AFL season he spread his workload between the AFL and the SANFL, and after scoring three goals on debut he kicked his ninth AFL goal well into his last game. In 2016 he joined Richmond as an assistant coach. In 2019 he joined the Essendon Coaching Group, working as an assistant to John Worsfold in succession planning to take over as head coach from 2021.
