At Findlay High School in Findlay, Ohio, Roethlisberger was captain of the Trojans’ football, basketball, and baseball teams. Roethlisberger did not play quarterback until his senior year, giving way to the coach’s son, Ryan Hite. Instead, Roethlisberger played wide receiver because, as coach Cliff Hite explained to the Toledo Blade, “My son throwing to Ben was a better combination.” Hite told the Toledo Blade regarding the decision to start his son at quarterback over Roethlisberger: “I’m a nationally known knucklehead.”

Retire

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger offered up the first concrete information on Thursday that he is planning to retire at the end of the season.

Roethlisberger spoke to the media and indicated all signs are pointing to this Monday’s game against the Cleveland Browns will be his final game at Heinz Field.

There has been speculation most of the season that Roethlisberger would not be returning but this is the first time we’ve actually heard it from Roethlisberger. Big Ben also joked that after he retires he wouldn’t come out if the Steelers called needing help.

Barring the unforeseen, Monday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns will be Ben Roethlisberger’s final home game as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback. For the first time, Roethlisberger’s family attended an away game during last Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs. Roethlisberger has reportedly asked several of his former teammates to be at Monday’s game against the Browns.

Publicly, Roethlisberger has deflected questions about his future while remaining focused on the task at hand, which is helping Pittsburgh (7-7-1) figure out a way to get into the playoffs for a second straight year. Like Roethlisberger, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is focused on the present while politely declining to wax poetically about Roethlisberger’s career, at least for the time being.

Salary

Despite having a few impressive seasons, Ben broke the bank with his last two contracts – earning a whopping $148 million since 2015. His worst deal for the Steelers was a two-year $68 million extension that Ben earned at the ripe old age of 37 in 2019.
