Last game:
The Steelers sent Ben Roethlisberger out as a winner in what was likely his final game at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh’s 26-14 win over the Browns on Monday night also served as retribution for the Steelers, who 358 days earlier fell to Cleveland in the AFC wild card round.
T.J. Watt led the Steelers’ dominant defensive effort with four sacks, while Najee Harris’ 188 rushing yards and a touchdown spearheaded Pittsburgh’s offensive attack.
The win kept Pittsburgh (8-7-1) alive in the AFC wild card race with one week left in the regular season. The loss ensured that Cleveland (7-9) would finish the season with a losing record a year after winning its first playoff game in 26 years.
Retire:
Roethlisberger embraced Steelers minority owner Thomas Tull, who took out a full, front-page advertisement in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday to thank the quarterback. Tull also wore a black Roethlisberger jersey.
Early in pregame warm-ups, Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II thanked Roethlisberger for a “great 18 years” on the video board, but outside of that, the Steelers went light on tributes to the quarterback. During the fourth-quarter playing of “Renegade,” there weren’t any extra Roethlisberger moments added to the highlight reel.
Super Bowl Wins:
The NFL world was met with quite a shock today as insiders discovered that Ben Roethlisberger has privately spoken to former teams within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that he will be retiring after this season.
Roethlisberger’s retirement has been on the horizon for quite some time, as his play has been declining as of late. Big Ben has a host of records and accolades on his extensive NFL resume, but none more important than winning the Super Bowl. In Roethlisberger’s 18 seasons, he’s only won the Super Bowl twice.
