(CNN) Essential Quality, coached by Brad Cox and spearheaded by jockey Luis Saez, won the 153rd race of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

The horse was the early betting favorite to win the 1.5-mile race and finished ahead of Hot Rod Charlie and 146th Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer, who finished second and third respectively.

Hot Rod Charlie was the early leader but the quality required passed him in the final turn and put him on the stretch to win. The victory gave trainer Brad Cox his first ever Triple Crown victory.

A limited crowd of 11,000 with proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test required for admission were allowed to participate in the “Champion’s Test”.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo delivered the traditional “riders up” call through the television screen. Sam “The Buggler” Grossman was deemed essential personnel and voiced the call to post. A scratch recording of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” leads up to the track with a 10-horse field.

Then nothing but the sound of birds chirping. Lots of them, loud.

Tagg wasn’t complaining. He is now 82, so much a creature of routine that he told the NBC television presenter to hurry up and start presenting the trophy. He had work to do.As Tiz the Law stretched out as he jumped from trampoline to trampoline, Tagg understood how lucky he was to get another shot at the Triple Crown.

“I am glad I lived long enough to get a horse like this,” said Tagg, who became the oldest trainer to win the Belmont.

He did so by handing the horse of a lifetime to 25-year-old Manny Franco, who would be riding his first Belmont. More experienced riders wanted a mount on Tees the Law, but Tagg stayed with Franco.

The Bad Cox’s Essential Quality overcame a stubborn Hot Rod Charlie in the final stretch to win the Belmont Stakes. The ownership group Godolphin Stables bred him from the head Sir Tapit, who gave birth to three other Belmont Stakes winners. Essential Quality went on to win the Jim Dandy Stakes and Traverse Stakes in Saratoga. After a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, he was retired to stud at Jonabelle Farms in Darley and announced the 2021 U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Male at the Eclipse Awards.
