Results

The most dramatic moment of the fight came in the third round, with Pitbull landing a heavy right arm that staggered Mackie. Mackie responded to the injury by scoring a takedown and controlling the action on the ground. Working back on his feet, Pitbull locks Mackie into a deep guillotine, which seemed close to the finish, before freeing Mackie’s head.

Both fighters were increasingly tired in the final two rounds, but Mackie seemed to do a better job with strikes and takedowns. That effort turned out to be too little, too late as Pitbull would have raised his hand after round five when all three official scorecards were read in his favor. The official scores are 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47.

Highlights

Vadim Nemkov left Bellator 277 with his Light Heavyweight Championship in hand, but he did not beat Corey Anderson. A head collision in the third round opened a bad cut on Nemkov’s left eye, prompting referee Frank Trigg to declare a no-contest.

Nemkov outplayed his opponent in the first round, but Anderson raised the temperature in the second and third rounds. The pace was firmly in place with Anderson in third as he landed in a solid combination that set up a valuable takedown. Nemkov did well to avoid a loss on the bottom and even got caught in a guillotine choke forcing Anderson to pull out. Anderson took the top spot in the closing minutes, landing a vicious elbow in the process. One wrong guess resulted in an accidental headbutt that cut Nemkov over his eye.

Fight card

Bellator MMA returns with a monstrous incident on Friday night. The promotion has two of its biggest title fights of the year, which are slated to go down from the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., as part of a return to action from a short break. The fight card on Friday nights will run for four weeks with five different events.

Featherweight king AJ Mackie once again leaves no doubt behind when he gives a rematch to former champion and pound-for-pound great Patricio Pitbull. The two battled last July, with Mackie needing less than two minutes to eliminate the former two-division champion and win the title (with a $1 million prize for the Featherweight World Grand Prix).

Another Grand Prix culminates in the co-main event as champions Vadim Nemkov and Corey Anderson fight to complete the light heavyweight tournament. Nemkov has had a rough run on the division since joining Bellator in 2017 and is looking to cement his place at the top once again by beating red-hot Anderson, who signed with Bellator in 2020. Has won three straight TKOs.
