Roma took the lead – contrary to game time – when Leandro Paredes scored from the penalty spot shortly before half-time. He added a second chance after an hour to level the tie, with Paredes again converting a penalty. But Leverkusen – as they have done so often this year – got an important goal. Granit Xhaka’s whipped corner eluded everyone except Gianluca Mancini, who turned the ball into his own net. Josip Stanisic produced further heroics in stoppage time, scoring in the 96th minute to continue Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.

Undefeated Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are in a strong position to book a place in the Europa League final in Dublin after a 2-0 victory in the semi-final away leg against Roma.

Highlights

With another goal from the Croatian player Josip Stanisic in the last moments of the match (90 7′), Bayer Leverkusen secured a place in the UEFA Europa League final this Thursday after a 2-2 draw at home against Roma. They took advantage of the 0-2 win in the first leg to take a 4-2 lead on aggregate.

Two penalties, one in the 43rd minute and the other in the 66th minute, both converted by Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, made things difficult for Leverkusen. Despite being the dominant team, Leverkusen saw their first-leg lead slip away.

However, in the 83rd minute, Leverkusen got a lease of life from Mancini’s own goal from a corner taken by Jeremy Frimpong.

97 minutes into stoppage time, Josip Stasinik scored the equaliser, not only securing Leverkusen’s place in the final, but also extending their unbeaten streak to 49 matches in all competitions.

Results

Bayer Leverkusen set a new European record of 49 consecutive games unbeaten by earning a late draw with Roma to reach the Europa League final.

Josip Stanisic scored with the last kick of the game in the 97th minute to give Xabi Alonso’s side a 2–2 draw and a 4–2 aggregate win.

Roma, who had lost the first leg in Italy but were much improved in Germany, equalized through two penalties from Leandro Paredes.

But Gianluca Mancini’s devastating own goal gave Leverkusen a vital lead in the two-legged semi-final – before Croatia defender Stanisic ensured history with the latest in a long series of late goals for Leverkusen.

They have now gone 49 consecutive games without a defeat in all competitions, including 40 wins.

It means Leverkusen, who were beaten at this stage by Roma last season, are better than the undefeated run achieved by an Eusebio-led Benfica team between December 1963 and February 1965.
