Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will not play tonight with a left shoulder injury he has been playing for weeks. His position appears precarious for the rest of the season.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mayfield is expected to require surgery on a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. This seems a bit worse than the previous reporting pointed out; Rapoport reported two weeks ago that Mayfield had not needed surgery “yet”.
But Rapoport reports that the surgery could be delayed until after the season and Mayfield could play with an injury. However, the same report says that “taking more damage will make it challenging.”
Realistically, it is unlikely that Mayfield could play the rest of the season without inflicting more damage. Quarterbacks get hit, and they land awkwardly, often with 300-pound men landing on top of them. This is a recipe for more damage on an already injured shoulder.
