BERIA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns agreed to trade quarterback Baker Mayfield on Wednesday to the Carolina Panthers for a 2024 conditional draft pick. A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Panthers will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield’s salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million.
Contract end
After being first selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield signed a four-year contract with the Browns. The collective bargaining agreement presets the total value of Mayfield’s four-year contract at $32.7 million. The entire contract is fully guaranteed, including a $21.8 million signing bonus. As part of the contract, Mayfield is paid roster bonuses for 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The four-year rookie contract signed by Mayfield and Brown includes a team option for a fifth season. The Browns opted for the fifth-year option in April of 2021. Mayfield paid a fully guaranteed salary of $18.9 million in the value of the option. It is based at Mayfield who played more than 75% of the Browns’ offensive snaps in two of his first three seasons. However, it is less than that of Lamar Jackson, as Mayfield did not make the Pro Bowl in his first three seasons.
Contract 5th year option
The Browns have agreed to pay Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets $10.5MM of Mayfield’s $18.9MM fifth-year option salary. To facilitate his move out of Cleveland, Mayfield has agreed to cut $3.5MM from his 2022 salary, Garafolo says.
