Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been battling a shoulder injury since Week 2 against the Houston Texans. Mayfield is said to have had a partial tear of the labrum in his left shoulder (non-throwing), but just this week it was reported that he had a complete tear of the labrum.

Baker Mayfield has worn a sling brace on his left shoulder since Week 2 and continues to play through it. On Sunday, defensive end J.J. Watt, Baker Mayfield was lying on the field in obvious pain.

Mayfield apparently dislocated his shoulder, which is part of the Labrum issue. While medical and training staff were able to locate Mayfield’s shoulder again, this is not a condition that would keep reoccurring.

Mayfield told reporters on Tuesday that he planned to take the field on Thursday and it was “his decision,” but a second opinion from Brown’s medical staff and another doctor proved otherwise.

With a short week left to prepare for Thursday night’s AFC matchup against the Denver Broncos, the Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday morning that there was not enough time to get Mayfield ready to play.

It would break Mayfield’s streak of 51 consecutive games since his rookie season in 2018.

Mayfield, by some measures, had a better season than 2020, before missing out on Week 7, when their red-hot play in the second half saw the Browns leap into the playoffs with a 6-2 finish. His completion percentage (67.1), yards per attempt (8.5) and passer rating (97.8) are career highs. But he has already done 5 turnovers (3 INTs, 2 Lost Fumbles), when that number was 12 last season.

Mayfield has been wild and inconsistent with his volume, missing a lot of short-to-intermediate throws he should have done, compensating by flashing on some big guys – the first half in Week 6 Hail Mary TD See. He also hasn’t been helped by a drop or missed connection from his receiver, which often tops Odell Beckham Jr. forcing the ball.

It probably didn’t help that Mayfield had been playing since Week 2 with a completely torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder. Unfortunately, he aggravated the injury during a hard fall against Arizona on Sunday, at which point Case Keenum will need to start for Cleveland in Thursday night’s home game versus Denver.

Starting with consecutive games against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, maybe some rest and a mini-by will help Mayfield correct for a crucial stretch. Unfortunately, there are other fundamental issues hurting crime as well.

Brown can’t keep all of its major components healthy.
Beckham started on the shelf with a knee injury and is now battling a shoulder injury. More important at wide receiver, Mayfield’s old inside-outside reliable Jarvis Landry has been out since the start of Week 2 with a knee injury. Back on the run, Nick Chubb is back in missing time with a calf injury, and Karim Hunt could be out for much longer with a similar illness.

The Browns’ top-flight offensive line isn’t immune to the injury bug. Left tackle Jedric Willis Jr. did not play well in Week 1 with an ankle injury and it became difficult enough that he could not play the last two matches.
