In team interviews, scouts and coaches alike, Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe raises the question: How will your production translate to a pro level?
Zappe sees the questions as stemming from a place of “curiosity.” The Victoria, Texas, native is eager to explain what he believes is his FBS-record 5,987 yards and 62 touchdowns in a season. Not a mirage.
Sure, he understands how an air raid offense wouldn’t exactly parallel the pro-style system to which an NFL team would ask him to get used to. The Patriots selected Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe with the No. 137 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Zappe moved from Houston Baptist to Western Kentucky in 2021 and continues to illuminate the stat sheet. He set FBS records for pass yards with 5,967 and pass TD with 62 in 687 attempts.
At over 6-feet in shade, Zappe lacks in size and has average arms. But he throws a catchable ball and shows good eyesight and knowledge of where to go with the ball, which makes up for physical deficiencies. Despite not having the strongest hand, his ball placement can create explosive plays downfield. Zappe led FBS in completions (51) and yards (1,805) on deep passes in 2021.
Zappe has a great football IQ, which will help the Patriots’ QB room and give him a chance to develop into a reliable professional backup.
With New England needing to be young and fast, especially on defence, it is interesting to see Bill Belichick use a fourth-round pick on a clear backup QB. “It’s something I’ve been dreaming of since I first started playing at 5,” Zappe said.
He was not highly recruited, but has blossomed into a star.
Zappe, who grew up in Victoria, Texas, had a scholarship offer just out of high school, but it was working out just fine.
He made nine starts at Houston Baptists as a freshman, started all 11 games as a sophomore, and earned an honorable mention of the All-Southland Conference. Then, he led the nation in 2019 as a junior with 35 regular-season TD passes.

Zap’s success in his offense at Houston Baptist led Kitley to WKU. And that success took it to the top level of college football when WKU’s slow 1-4 start. The Hilltoppers finished the season 9–5 with a win over Appalachian State in the Boca Raton Bowl as Zappe set two NCAA passing records.
Zappe was passing 33-in-47 for 422 yards and threw for six touchdowns in the bowling victory. Those marks gave him the NCAA record for most passing yards and touchdowns in a single season. Zappe’s 5,967 passing yards broke the record set by Texas Tech QB BJ Simmons in 2003, and his 62 TD broke LSU QB Joe Burrow’s record of 60 TDs in 2019.
Zappe won’t be one of the first QBs selected in the 2022 draft, but he will be an interesting Day 2 or 3 prospect for teams looking for a developmental quarterback as the Air Raid passers-by are now getting more views from NFL teams following the passers-by’s success.
