The Bahrain Grand Prix , currently officially known as the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix for sponsorship reasons, is a Formula One motor racing event in Bahrain. The first race took place on 4 April 2004 at the Bahrain International Circuit. It made history as the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Middle East, and was awarded the “Best Organized Grand Prix” award by the FIA. [2] The race has generally been the third race of the Formula One calendar. However, in the 2006 season, Bahrain swapped places with the traditional opener, the Australian Grand Prix, which was pushed back to avoid a clash with the Commonwealth Games. In 2010, Bahrain staged the opening race of the 2010 season and the cars drove the full 6.299 km (3.914 mi) “endurance circuit” to celebrate F1’s ‘Diamond Jubilee’. In 2021, the Bahrain Grand Prix was again the season opener due to the 2021 Australian Grand Prix being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charles Leclerc took the first pole position of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, ahead of defending champions Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz in the qualifying season that went down the wire in Bahrain.

Ferrari’s Leclerc was fastest in Q1 but Red Bull’s Verstappen bounced back in Q2, leading him to a top-10 shootout in one go. Thus was set the stage for a face-off between the Champion and the Scuderia in Q3.

And it was then that Leclerc set a blistering 1m 30.558s benchmark, taking his second Bahrain GP pole. Verstappen could only come within 0.123s, while Sanz could not improve on his first run, finishing third by 0.129s. In away P4 was Verstappen’s teammate Perez.

Mercedes made it into Q3 – the only Mercedes-powered cars to do so – but couldn’t make it to the front row. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, while his former teammate Valtteri Bottas took an astonishing sixth on the grid for Alfa Romeo.

2022

Lewis Hamilton has told Sky Sports he and Max Verstappen have “a lot” in common as they are both “ruthless” on the track – but he hopes their F1 fight in 2022 will “maintain respect” after the intensity of last season .

Hamilton and Verstappen’s rivalry well and truly ignited last year with an entertaining title fight, littered with clashes and incidents as the Red Bull driver eventually took seven in the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP under controversial circumstances. The champion of the bar was thrown to the side.

Hamilton is using last year’s heartbreak to propel him for a season full of changes in 2022. He sat down with Sky Sports F1 new pundit Naomi Schiff to discuss Verstappen as well as his hopes for this year.
