The 2021 CFL season is the first season in which Rick Campbell is the team’s head coach. Campbell will also serve as general manager with co-general manager Neil McAvoy following the resignation of former general manager Ed Hervey.

The Lions held their training camp for the 11th consecutive season at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The 18-game season schedule was originally released on November 20, 2020, but it was announced on April 21, 2021 that the start of the season could be delayed until August and would have a 14-game schedule. On June 15, 2021, the league released a revised 14-game schedule with regular season play beginning on August 5, 2021.

The Lions enter this matchup tied for second place with the Roughriders in the East Division of the Canadian Football League, playing the same 4–2 record. BC lead the league in interceptions this season with six games over 10. During this three-match winning streak, BC have been led in their defence. The Lions have not allowed more than 18 points in any of those three wins and have only received one touchdown in their last 12 quarters of football.

Offensively, the Lions have received a boost from Lucky Whitehead, who has already accumulated more receiving yards through six games than in 15 games with Winnipeg during the 2019 Gray Cup championship run. Whitehead leads the CFL in receiving yards (554) and yards per catch (18.5), and the former Dallas Cowboys own two of the longest offensive touchdowns of the season, recording a pair of 75-yard scores.

On October 16, 2020, the team’s general manager Ed Hervey announced his resignation due to personal reasons.[8][9] There was speculation that his departure from the organization was related to a complaint filed by quarterback Mike Reilly, who was called upon to cancel the season. Despite that $250,000 was guaranteed in 2020. However, this was never confirmed, and the Lions eventually reached an agreement to renegotiate Reilly’s contract.

On December 7, 2020, it was announced that head coach Rick Campbell and director of football operations Neil McAvoy had been promoted to co-general managers.

The 2021 CFL Global Draft took place on April 15, 2021.The Lions won the draft lottery and were selected first overall. With the format of the Snake Draft, the Lions selected the first in the odd-numbered rounds and the last in the even-numbered rounds.
